May AOTM: Chonquita "CJ" Jones
CJ’s journey at Solcana started shortly after COVID, sparked by a realization: her previous gym wasn’t giving her what she needed. “I was talking with a neighbor about how my old gym didn’t feel intentional, diverse, or inclusive,” she shares. “I realized I wanted more than just a place to work out. I wanted a space where people could show up as they are, feel supported, and grow alongside good people.”
She then told her about the Black Strength class, and so CJ decided to check it out. “From my very first Thursday night class, I felt connection, energy, and a level of authenticity that’s hard to find. I wasn’t just another person in the room. I felt seen, supported, and excited to come back.”
“CJ is a life-long athlete, and so it's no surprise that gym stuff comes naturally to her. To reveal one secret, CJ is my neighbor so I am biased into thinking she is awesome. She has an adorable kiddo and is a very dedicated and loving parent. CJ is the type of person who asks how you are doing and genuinely wants to know the answer. She makes people feel seen and cared about immediately. I am lucky to know her ” -Coach Hannah
What keeps CJ coming back to Solcana is the people. “I’m motivated by being around individuals who are working toward their own goals without judgment,” she says. “That pushes me to stay consistent and challenge myself.”

Lately, that’s looked like committing to the 6am classes, focusing on consistency and getting stronger. “I’m proud of the consistency I’ve built so far,” she says. “And I know I’m just getting started.”
“I have only gotten to coach CJ a few times, but I hope to get to coach her more. She is a real joy to have in class and brings great energy and workout spirit with her. She is also one of those people who generally looks very experienced when lifting, but still enjoys feedback and takes it to heart and applies it when offered. I look forward to the next time she is in my class.” -Coach Garrett F.
“Omggg CJ is so strong! The energy and realness she brings to class are infectious and I love seeing other athletes observe her and build on her energy. Her tenacity during difficult workouts is so evident and makes her a joy to coach and workout with.” -Coach Anna
CJ’s fitness journey involved being an athlete in college. Fun Fact: CJ was a two-sport Division I athlete, both as a walk-on. She rowed on the novice crew team and played softball her last two years of college. “Because of that, Anytime cardio shows up in a workout, I will always choose the rower,” she says. “Running? I’ll do it… but let’s just say I’d pick the erg every time without hesitation.
Outside the gym, CJ loves sports and live events. “I’m a loyal Chicago fan at heart, but I’ve fully embraced the energy of the Minnesota Lynx. Their games are just too fun not to love,” she shares. CJ enjoys being out, trying new things, spending time with friends and family, coaching high school softball and taking advantage of everything the Twin Cities has to offer.

CJ is also currently preparing for her second YWCA Minneapolis Women's Triathlon, and she’s excited to keep building strength here as part of that journey.
“I love coaching CJ! She is strong AF and is always looking to get more technically proficient. Her smile is infectious and I love the energy she brings to early morning classes!” -Coach Kaitlin
But what really keeps CJ coming back to Solcana was the energy of the Black Strength class and the coaches who lead it. “There’s something powerful about being in a space where people genuinely support each other’s individual journeys,” CJ shares.
“As a Black queer woman, finding a fitness community where I feel fully welcomed and affirmed is everything,” CJ shares. “That’s exactly what I’ve experienced here. It’s collaborative, encouraging, and grounded in the idea that everyone belongs.”
Even as she continues to meet more people, that sense of belonging is always there. “Every time I walk in, I feel welcomed and motivated. It’s a space that allows me to show up as myself, focus on my growth, and enjoy the process.”

CJ is excited to continue building connections, getting stronger, and being part of this community. “I’m always up for meeting new people so come find me at the erg machine. I’ll be the one who is definitely not running.”
Thanks CJ for being such an amazing part of the Solcana community. We are always inspired by your dedication, kindness and energy you bring to class.
