Taking the Leap into Strength Training

For years, Samra had heard about Solcana—a gym known not just for its strength training but for its commitment to inclusivity. A former member had once told her how the coaches actively listen to feedback, working to create a space where everyone feels welcome.

But the timing never felt quite right. Travel, work, and life always seemed to get in the way. “I finally decided to take an Empower class in September 2023 because I wanted to learn how to lift weights and get stronger,” Samra shares.

After trying the two free classes that followed, the decision was clear: she was in.

Coach Garrett H. mentions, “It’s so fun to coach Samra! She’s such a humble and dedicated athlete, asking good questions, clearly seeking good form and technique. I’ve loved watching her work on her squat depth! She’s a great example for others in class. I very much admire and respect Samra.”

Finding Strength in Numbers (and Community)

Samra didn’t expect to find a community when she joined, but that’s exactly what happened. Two others from their Empower class signed up as well, and soon, a group chat formed to encourage each other and hold one another accountable.

“It started with just the three of us, but it’s slowly grown with more people in it,” Samra says. “We check in when someone is sick, has to take a break, or when life just happens. On days when I want to cancel class because I’m tired or it’s freezing outside, I think about seeing my friends, and it motivates me to go anyway. I’m always glad I did.”

Solcana has become more than just a place to lift weights. It’s a space filled with people from different backgrounds and ages, all cheering each other on. “I didn’t join to make friends, but I found a wonderful community,” Samra admits. “And I love it.”

Coach Sonal shares, "Samra is such a sweet person. It’s so much fun to see her working out and getting stronger each time. She knows to listen to her body and does exactly what’s right for her in the moment. I love that she takes feedbacks and forms suggestions so humbly and actually implements them. I love having Samra in my class whether it’s while coaching or while working out. Her smile, positive vibes and friendly self are all a wonderful influence on the class."

Coach Cate shares, “I love Samra! She is such a hardworking and diligent athlete. She always asks great questions and wants feedback on her form. She is so fun to have in class and it's been AMAZING to watch her grow as an athlete! I love when we end up in the same class together because she's so fun to be around.”

Beyond the Numbers: Strength in Everyday Life

The main goal? Get stronger. Samra knew that as she got older, building strength was just as important as cardio. She had tried a variety of activities before—biking, yoga, hiking, barre—but had never once touched a barbell.

Now? The numbers in the gym are going up, but it’s the everyday wins that stand out the most. “It’s nice to notice my strength in small moments, like when I’m carrying my suitcase through the airport or hauling all my groceries into my apartment in one trip,” she says.

Strength training has also unexpectedly improved other activities. Samra's yoga has improved and she has become appreciative of running thanks to Solcana, she mentions. And above all, Samra has embraced the idea that fitness is a lifelong journey. “ Being a member of Solcana has emphasized to me that fitness is a lifelong journey and that there's so much more time than you think to reach your goals. I'm excited to continue to improve my abilities at Solcana, Samra shares.”

Coach Lara mentions, “I always look forward to seeing Samra at Saturday strength classes, where she is a regular participant. She works hard, earnestly requests and incorporates feedback, and inspires others around her to do the same.  I love watching her strength and confidence grow!”

Outside the Gym: A Love for Exploration

When Samra is not lifting at Solcana, she's out exploring. She loves traveling, trying new foods, catching live music, biking, thrifting, and diving into books (currently in two book clubs!).

“I’m always on the lookout for new places, music, food, or books—so feel free to send recommendations my way!” Samra says.

With a passion for discovery and a growing strength both in and out of the gym, Samra’s Solcana journey is just getting started.

Thank you Samra for being such a bright light in our community! We are so thankful for your presence, energy and commitment to Solcana!
