Katie F: 1000 Class Athlete!
Katie has been a member at Solcana for over 8 years and as of this writing she has completed over 1,080 classes and counting. Throughout that time, Katie has been a warm and steady presence in this community. She shows up ready to work hard, and she brings that energy to everyone around her. Katie has built real connections here and helped make Solcana feel like home for a lot of people. We are so grateful to have had such an amazing member, athlete, and person as part of our community for so long.

Read on to learn a bit more about Katie and get all the savory deets about her workout. Be sure to join in the celebration during all Group Fitness classes this Saturday, October 3rd.
What's your go-to workout playlist? I generally like high energy, pop and dance music to exercise to. Bonus if I would have jumped around to it at a gay bar circa 2002-2006 ;)
Where are you from? I grew up in Oshkosh, WI in the center of the state. I went to college in Madison then lived in San Francisco before moving to Minneapolis in 2007 for grad school and haven't looked back.
How did you get started doing fitness stuff? I was in a lot of sports as a kid and teen. I played soccer and basketball in high school. In my adult life I bike commuted and went to the Y, but was very intimidated by free weights and generally wanted to be very anonymous in a fitness setting. I dabbled in Solcana via the (short-lived) outdoor summer offering at Matthews Park - it was across the street from my house and only twice a week. Because the people were so welcoming, I got over some of my desire to be anonymous (also because I had to - there were usually only about 4-6 people in the class). My partner and several friends convinced me to try some classes at the gym once the outdoor class was over. It turned out I loved the challenge of learning new movements and felt super comfortable in the community that Solcana has created!
What is your athletic super-power? What is something you feel especially good at? I am not sure it's a super power, but I tend to like things that other people really don't - burpees, wall balls, and bear crawl!
What is the area you would most like to improve on? I have been working on my deadlift for the past year and want to continue to improve on this lift. And generally I think a lot about building and maintaining strength because I want to be able to get up off the floor when I’m old.

Katie's Workout
Why did you choose these exercises? I love a chipper and the satisfaction that comes from completing a long, hard workout that felt almost insurmountable at the beginning. I also like the variety!
What do you think people should focus on or feel with this workout? Try not to get intimidated by the big numbers. There is a lot of time to complete it and so many variations for many/most of the movements. Find what works for you! Take breaks when you need to and then just hop back in. Also, I like to have a buddy who might be interested in breaking it up similarly or who you can ask to cheer you on if that is helpful for you.
Any advice for someone about to do it? One thing I love about a chipper is that you can break it up however you want. So, you can divide it by 5 or 10 and do a bunch of rounds or you can get your least favorite movement out of the way and then move on - athletes choice!
